If you're getting CRC errors and it's not the tapes causing it then your
tape drives must be the cause. Either they need cleaning or repair.

Subject: [Networker] CRC errors

Hi Gurus,

Server: NetWorker 7.4 SP2 Build 431 under Windows Server 2003 Standard
Edition
Jukebox: Quantum M1500, comprising 2 SDLT 320 drives

I have a problem where (apparently) since upgrading to NW 7.4 SP2 I am
seeing a lot of Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) errors, 4 or 5 in recent
weeks, even on brand new tapes. So far our support has suggested
upgrading our SCSI and tape drivers.

I looked at updating the LSI SCSI drivers. Our server administrator
advised that, because we use HP servers, I should use HP Smart Start to
install updated HP drivers, which I did. Smart Start reported that it
did not need to update them. The tape drivers are Quantum's own, rather
than Windows', and were installed after we upgraded to Windows Server
2003 prior to upgrading NetWorker to 7.4.2.

I am curious at how the drivers worked before and after upgrading from
Windows Server 2000 to Windows Server 2003, they worked with NetWorker
7.2.2 under both O/Ss and we are seemingly only now having problems
after upgrading to NetWorker 7.4 SP2.

Has anybody out there had any similar experience or suggestions they'd
like to share? Fazil Saiyed raised a similar query in June for a NetApp
VTL, but it looks like any responses he got must have been off-list.

Best regards,

Vince
