Yes. You are totally off base :)
Take a look at the documentation for "directives". Each client has a directive
assigned (even if it's only Default). You can use a standard directive to
compress all files sent though the save stream during the backup, or you can
skip files, or you can use different ASM modules (rawasm, logasm, etc...).
You will need to create a new directive (say "EMC Log skip") and then assign
that directive to the client.

When I am configuring the save set on the backup server for what I would like
included, I use a setup for that server like this:
