So it looks like your storagenodes may have multiple ip adresses and/or
hostnames... I presume you're putting some hostname into the
'storage nodes' field of the client record for the client you want to
backup - for it to work that name you put there must be listed as an
alias hostname of the client record for the storagenode... Maybe that's
your problem...

For starters, Here's the connections that have to work...

Datazone.temple.edu TCP conn to Clientname
Clientname TCP conn back to 'server network interface' (or
Datazone.temple.edu if that field is blank).
Clientname TCP conn to 'storage nodes' hostname.. This hostname must
be known as an alias for the storagenode.

Subject: [Networker] How to back up to a storage node via a tagged VLAN
on the server

I manage one NetWorker 7.4.1. data zone on a Solaris 10 box with
around 300 clients (mostly Linux and Windows). About half the data
that's backed up each night sits on the same subnet as our backup
server and one of its two storage nodes. The second storage node sits
on a private network that communicates with my NetWorker server via a
second ethernet drop on the NSR server that's on the private network.

Due to a need to keep backup traffic to a minimum across our firewall,
several clients on different subnets back up to the NSR server via a
series of tagged VLANs. We have been doing it this way for about a
year and it works when the backup data goes to tapes that are attached
to the NSR server. What I prefer to do is have the backup data go to
one of the two storage nodes.

Here's my set-up

DataZone.temple.edu server on a public and private network with tagged
VLANs on the public network
DataZone.temple.edu has access to ...
StorageNode1.temple.edu on the same public subnet as DataZone
StorageNode2.subnet.temple.edu on a private subnet with some other
clients

I want to know how to route the data from a client on one of the
tagged subnets to StorageNode1 or StorageNode2, both of which have
unimpeded access to DataZone.temple.edu.

I have tried various combinations of setttings to make that happen,
but the backup never gets past the point where the status says
"contacting client". If anyone has any idea on how to make this work,
please let me know. In theory, it seems to me, what I want to do
should work because the backup server can communicate fine with all
the clients and the backup server can also communicate fine with the
two storage nodes.
