I know on Windows , if IBM drives, just use ntutil and set compression ( 
This utility  comes with the IBM drivers).
i.e launch from cmd line>manual mode>set drive parm ( compresion),please 
read up on this utility before use & make sure you test before 
implementing in production.
HP has GUI utility which should let you do the same.
