You have to configure the full snapshot path in the save set attribute of your
networker client.
And, yes you can't just point to the snapshot folder. If you want to backup
snapshots, you have to specify each path to the snapshot you want to backup.
Then you will see the same path you've backup up:
/vol/vol1/.snapshot/snap_to_tape
You can browse into the snapshot and see the normal content of your volume.
Thats what I wanted to explain with 'the snaps are "frozen views" of the active
filesystem at a specific time'.
May be you can have a look at http://www.netapp.com/products/snapshot.html to
make things clearer.
You are not able to do a ndmp backup of the deltas you see in every snapshot.
Snapshots are just other pointers to blocks.
And not only to changed or deleted blocks, thats why a ndmp backup of a
snapshot is always a full backup.

Subject: Re: [Networker] Netapp Snapshots & Networker
Thanks for the response. I do specify volumes in my save set, but I do not
follow. Where am I configuring the snapshot as a save set? In the networker
client of on the Netapp? Are you saying that I cannot just point to the hidden
snapshot folder, but have to point to each snapshot within the folder?
I tried something like this in the client.
/vol/vol1
/vol/vol1/.snapshot
I expected to see that as a directory in the NW user, but still did not see it.

Re: [Networker] Netapp Snapshots & Networker
Hi,
If you specify a save set like /vol/root, the Volume will be backed up
without the .snapshot Folder.
Even if you specify somthing liket this, /vol/root/.snapshot you'll run
into an error.
The snaps are "frozen views" of the active filesystem at a specific
time.
If you want backup a snapshot you have to configure the snapshot
explicitly as a save set: /vol/root/.snapshot/snap_to_tape
This will back up the snapshot, but be careful, if you backup a snapshot
like this, you will always do a full backup.
The NetApp snapshot technology will of course not transferred to tape,
this means you are not able to backup just the deltas, you see in the
snapshot on the volume. It's like a backup of the whole volume, at the
time the snapshot has been created.
Cheers

Subject: [Networker] Netapp Snapshots & Networker
I am testing backing up our Netapp 2050 filer and was wondering how or
if I can recover the snapshot folder for each volume. I do not see it in
the Networker User so I wonder if they are not a part of the backup,
they are hidden and therefore I cannot see them, or do I need an enabler
to back them up. I am currently using NDMP backup to a non-NDMP device
connected via SCSI to my Networker server which is running 7.4sp1
Thanks
