Stan,
I would love to hear the performance of multiplexing NDMP backups to
non-NDMP devices over the network.
I am able to run at LTO-2 speed on a Sun 280R with Solaris 9. We are
also multiplexing NDMP and non-NDMP streams to the same adv_file device
with no apparent performance issue. The issue we have with this setup is
with restores. It seems that when Networker is encapsulating an NDMP
backup stream on the tape, it needs to restore (or at least report
about) larger chunks of data (or so it seems on the console):
10/21/07 12:00:08 nsrd: fas3050.tau.ac.il:/vol/mail (10/09/07) starting
read from 000302 of 271 GB
10/21/07 12:18:36 nsrd: fas3050.tau.ac.il:/vol/mail (10/09/07) done
reading 400 MB
10/21/07 12:18:36 nsrd: legato.tau.ac.il:/vol/mail done browsing
I cannot really say that I can see some impact on recovery speed. It
does, however, causes inexperienced users to call me asking about this
large recovery size.

I would rebuild your jukebox and say yes at is this an ndmp device.

Rebuilding my jukebox is an option I prefer to avoid. I had a WebEx with
EMC and than a follow-up phone call. They are investigating the problem.
In the meanwhile, their recommendation is that I do DSA NDMP backups to
non-NDMP devices. I am trying that now with two clients and its working.
I intend to test doing a recover on Monday. If the recover works, I
definitely prefer the DSA method since it means I won't have to set
aside five tape drives just for NDMP purposes.
