Talk to your Local EMC rep, i believe recent CDL's come with built in 
cloning SN licence, if you are not already using this capability then you 
should.
Take a look at your SAN and server performance and you might be able to 
improve there as well, i.e are you utilizing highest capable\avallable  FC 
or SCSI speeds ? are you utilizing all available FC ports from CDL  to 
maximize throughput ?
Lastly, try to architect the backups so 
1. You only clone what is absolutely needed offsite or per policy.
2. Speed up backups by improving Network, hardware or additional SN 
servers.
3. Schedule backups to avoid conflicting with cloning schedule if 
possible.
You may have to do more then one step to achieve improvements.
