So which is it? Should we use spaces or tabs for directives? Does it matter?

For example, if I have a directive like:

<< /path >>
   +null: .?* *

or

<< /path >>
   skip: dir1

Should that be any number of spaces preceding the null or skip? I've always used a single tab to proceed the null or skip while the "<< /path >>" part is all the way to the left margin. However, when creating client
side directives, I've typically just done it this way:

skip: dir1
skip: dir2

with no preceding tab wherein I don't need the "<< dir >>" part since I have the .nsr file sitting right at the same level as the directory I want to skip.
