True....

One example I can think of that illustrates this point is here in Ohio where I
work. An college intern had taken home a backup tape from work that contained
social security numbers of thousands of people in Ohio who had dealt with their
Workmans Compensation system (I think?). His car was broken into and the backup
tape along with other items were stolen. The State has agreed to pay for credit
monitoring for these thousands of people (not cheap), but at the same time they
issued a statement that it is 'highly unlikely' that someone could figure out
how to extract meaningful data from the tape.... How did they arrive at that
conclusion ?
Do they use some proprietary backup scheme that no one else uses (I doubt it)?
Maybe the data is encrypted on the tape ? (I also doubt that)

It all depends on the knowledge and skill level of whomever is attempting to
extract meaningful data from the tape in question... And the resources ($$$)
available to them. For most of the people on this list, it would not be an
impossible task, but for the layperson or common criminal, it would be quite an
undertaking.

If someone stole a tape to read it, they'll eventually figure that out pretty
easily, if they don't know it already.

That is provided that they know the data on the tape requires Networker to read
it.....(and a compatible version at that...)

Given a tape with no other information that it is a 'backup' tape, how would
you 'know' to use Networker to read it, what if it was written by Netbackup or
another backup product ?

Dave,

Yes.....anyone can easily download an eval copy of Networker and install, scan
for a bootstrap, do the mmrecov, and perform a directed restore of the data to
any of the clients on the network.

Good day,

I need to know if it's easy for someone to recover data stored on a tape by
Networker if that someone doesn't have Networker to restore the data with. It
may sound like I'm that someone but this is a security audit question. They
want to know if someone who gets his hands on one of our tapes can restore the
data easily.

Thanks,
David
