Yes, the SL-500 does offer a front panel, optional at extra cost. If you
have it, you can use it to move tapes around between the CAP, any drive and
any slot. As noted previously, you can also do that via the StreamLine
console and via the sjimm command.

My personal opinion:

The SL-500's major strength is its compactness. STK (I think the design was
finalized before the Sun takeover) managed to fit an amazing number of
slots, drives and CAP ports into a one-rack footprint.

Its major drawback is its speed, or lack thereof. A fully loaded, five
module SL-500 takes about 30 minutes from reset to ready, vs. at most three
minutes for the L-series. That translates into at least an extra half hour
of downtime any time the door has to be opened for service.

When you open the CAP, you must open all the module CAPs; you can't select
just one or two. And after you close the CAPs it takes a very long time --
measured in minutes, not seconds as in the L-series -- before a fully-loaded
SL-500 is ready. Sun/STK's suggested workaround is to reconfigure some of
the CAP ports as regular slots.

Lesser -- but still major -- complaints include the lack of power switches
on the drives (you have to physically slide them out to power cycle them)
and the fact that the SLConsole software has to be installed on your PC;
it's not accessible via a browser.
