You are correct in all of your statements. You can certainly run the
tests with compression off than on, but I would assume you will be
running production with compression on so why not just test with that.
You will want to test will multiple streams on one drive to see the max
speed that the drive can handle. Do one stream as a first test, than 4,
6, 8...etc...When the speed does not increase anymore you have maxed out
the drive.

Subject: [Networker] write speed tests using bigasm?
I need to use bigasm to do NetWorker write speed tests on four LTO-3
drives on a storage node server.
1. I assume that when I run the save command on the snode to test each
drive that I'll need to have
the other 3 drives disabled so NetWorker will use only the specific
device I want to test? Is this the only way to force it to
use a given drive for the save test?
2. If I want to test all the drives simultaneously to see how fast
NetWorker can write to them concurrently then I
assume I would need to run 4 saves and set the max target sessions to 1
for each device?
3. Kind of a last dumb question, I know, but it's been a while since
I've used bigasm, but
I assume I'll need to have a NetWorker labeled tape in the drive just
like with any save, correct?
I will be using hptapeperf tool also to test basic write speed outside
of NetWorker.
Is it worth turning compression on and off on the drives when doing
these tests or just leave it on?
Thanks.
George
