Hello,
I'm suspecting that some of our tapes have physical errors so I
would like to check them and discard if necessary.
Is there any method to check these tapes in an easy manner? Is it
possible to launch some "check" command that analyzes one or more
tapes in the changer and give us a result of the status of the data
(something like a virtual restore of all the data).
Cloning tapes is a good method, but what makes you suspect some tape
may be defective?
If you suspect defective tape media, you can try reviewing your
NetWorker server's daemon.log
file and look for block size or fsf errors, then back track in the
log to see which tape drew that error.
I find that in most cases, tape errors can be fixed by removing the
suspect tape from the media
database and then manually loading the tape into a tape drive and
overwriting the NetWorker label
with some nonsense data such as a largish log file. This works pretty
well for me, so you might want
to try it too.
