Unfortunaley the only real way to verify a tape is to clone it
(One could clone to disk for that purpose and delete the clone
afterwards )

I don't have a script to do this, but I was just asked for exactly the
same thing by my manager as a precaution to avoid the problem you just
cited. What I am thinking of doing is putting a few files in a directory
on a client, on each disk or partition on that client, then touching
each test file every day via a scheduled job on that client.
Then all I think I need to do is set up another scheduled job to recover
the most recent backup of those files into the same directory where they
reside and simply do a diff of the recovered files against the original
copy, and if the diff finds any differences, sent out alerts to people,
and delete the recovered files if they are okay.
Its not fool proof, but it should work.
