Nancy,

Answers are interspersed with your questions below. We're small enough
though that my answers probably aren't particularly useful for you.

Subject: [Networker] Staffing - Survey

Hi Legato Listserve

This isn't a legato/networker specific question .... But, how is your
organization structured for Backup/Storage Staffing. I'm trying to get an
idea of how other organizations deal with the storage/server growth
phenomenom - and any information you can provide would be most
appreciated. Just so we are talking apples and apples - if you could
answer these questions. I know this is a repeat from 2002 - but things
have changed a bit in the last 4 years.

1. How many systems do you backup with Networker? 10 systems (9
Windows, 1 Solaris)

2. How many Networker Servers (Zones) do you support? One

3. How many TB's of data do you support? 0.4 (400 GB)

4. How many storage nodes / tape devices / libraries ? One Server/Storage
Node, One library, 2 drives (AIT-4).

5. How many full time FTE are dedicated to supporting legato? (please use
percentages if partial FTE, for example .5 Windows FTE + .5 Unix FTE)

Not sure how to answer this. I support backups and have one guy who covers
for me when I'm gone. I spend about 15 minutes a day on backups unless
there is some problem. Once a week I spend 30-45 minutes swapping tapes in
the library and initializing them for the next week. I probably average
less than one problem a month and it usually takes less than an hour to
clear it up.

6. If you do have FTE's assigned to backups what are their job titles?

My official job title is "Senior Operations System Analyst" but I consider
my real job title as "System/Database/ERP Administrator and Backup Guru ;-)

7. How is backup monitoring/reporting handled within your organization,
centrally through data center or decentrally through systems
administrators?

Completion/bootstrap messages are e-mailed to all 4 of us in the IS
department but in practice only me and my part time backup pay any attention
to them. As long as the backups run and I'm able to do the restores I'm
called on to do no one else in the organization cares about the information.
So mostly, unless I need to justify an upgrade to the backup systems there
is no formal reporting. But I do look at the completion notices closely so
I have a sense of what's going on.

8. What operating systems are you supporting for servers/storage nodes
and clients?

The Networker Server/Storage Node is on W2K. We also back up Windows NT and
Solaris 7.

9. How many application specific backups do you provide and what type?
(e.g. Exchange, Oracle, Etc)

We use the Exchange module to backup our Exchange server. We also have
Oracle and SQL Server here but the DB's are small enough that we can back
them up by dumping the DB each night and backing up that dump. We also have
a special backup for the Oracle Archive Log files.

10. Who makes sure your backups work on the weekends and vacations?

I have the Completion/bootstrap notices sent to my home e-mail and I'll
check them on Saturday (Fulls run on Friday night/Saturday morning) so if
there's a problem I can run in and check things out (about a 10 minute
drive). If I'm on vacation or otherwise unable to check my home e-mail then
it doesn't get checked until Monday.

Thank you in advance for your input.
