It's a rather odd schedule, but it ensures that you will never need more
than two tapes to do a restore -- the full and the most recent backup.

That assumes that your full and your most recent each fit on one tape,
which may not be the case.

Of course, AFAIK (and I could very well be wrong), using

        f,8,7,6,5,4,3

for your backup schedule is exactly the same thing as using

        f,N,N,N,N,N,N

where N is any number 1-9. In other words, there's no reason why the
numbers need to get smaller -- they could all be "5" and the affect
should be the same thing.

Personally if you're going to play that much with levels I'd recommend a
"towers of hanoi" schedule.

Agreed.

 The problem with the Full, 8, 7, 6, 5...
schedule is that each day uses more tape than the one before it (except
for the initial level 8, of course).

Exactly.

And that it's the same as just
saying full, incr, incr, incr...

I don't understand this last statement -- f,8,7,6,5 (or the equivalent
f,5,5,5,5) is not the same as f,i,i,i,i, since an incr backs up only
the files that have changed since the last backup of any level (not just
the last backup of a lower level).
