It's a rather odd schedule, but it ensures that you will never need more
than two tapes to do a restore -- the full and the most recent backup.
That level 3 on Thursday will backup everything that has changed since
the last full.

Personally if you're going to play that much with levels I'd recommend a
"towers of hanoi" schedule. The problem with the Full, 8, 7, 6, 5...
schedule is that each day uses more tape than the one before it (except
for the initial level 8, of course). And that it's the same as just
saying full, incr, incr, incr...

My choice would be to simplify the whole thing and reduce the number of
levels you are playing with. With 3 levels + full you can make is to
you'll never have to go to more than 4 tapes on a weekly schedule and
rarely need more than 3. Our bi-weekly schedule here looks something
like full, incr, 9, incr, incr, 7, incr, 5, incr, 9, incr, incr, 7,
incr. In the worst case I'll have to do a restore after the second
double-incr days, and I will potentially need 5 tapes, the full, the
level 5, the level 9 and the two incrementals -- it's only 5 tapes
because I have to run on a bi-weekly schedule instead of weekly because
of the amount of data I have to backup.
