You can view the logs (30 days are kept online) to see the start and stop of
the client. One of my unix admins wrote a script to capture the start and
stop and build a report.

The entry on a Unix box in the /nsr/logs/messages file looks like this:

Aug 18 10:07:31 server syslog: NetWorker savegroup: (info) starting
client-mssql-log (with 1 client(s))
Aug 18 10:11:45 server syslog: NetWorker savegroup: (notice)
client-mssql-log completed, total 1 client(s), 0 Hostname(s) Unresolved, 0
Failed, 1 Succeeded.
Aug 18 10:11:45 server syslog: Start time: Fri Aug 18 10:07:31 2006
Aug 18 10:11:45 server syslog: End time: Fri Aug 18 10:11:45 2006
Aug 18 10:11:45 server syslog:
Aug 18 10:11:45 server syslog: --- Successful Save Sets ---
Aug 18 10:11:45 server syslog: client: G:\MSSQL\BACKUP\DBS level=full,
2233 MB 00:03:35 21 files
Aug 18 10:11:45 server syslog: newton.ab.bluecross.ca: index:client-
level=full, 212 MB 00:00:20   1163 files

The stop and start are for the client. No matter how many streams there are.
This one happens to be for a single stream

Has anyone ever developed a way to find out historically how much time
a backup client takes to backup?

In the logs only the group times seem to be tracked, client save sets
are tracked but not the client itself.

Also confounding the issue is , in the group log, individual saveset
elapsed time is listed, but if running

parallel , mutliple savesets run at the same time, so this doesn't help
much.
