This is how I backup my CIFS filesystems on our NAS. It works great,
though I recently ran into a problem where I migrated the CIFS backups
to a different client, and was no longer able to recover some of the
old CIFS data.

The problem is apparently related to Windows ACLs and non Windows
managed NAS devices (I came across vendors of other apps reporting
similar issues when researching it). In our case, apparently something
had changed on the particilar dir I was trying to restore, and there
was an invalid SID in it. The NetWorker User GUI would fail (no matter
where I tried restoring it to), and just say "Didn't recover requested
file...". Not exactly useful info.

Running the command-line recover in debug mode said "The security ID
structure is invalid" after writing the first file, and then failed.
However, I was able to workaround it by using the command-line recover
and relocating it to the local drive. I then manually moved it to the
NAS directory. I am not sure why the GUI would not allow me to relocate
it. Saveset recover (to original location or relocated) from the GUI
also failed.

I have an issue open with Legato regarding this, so far they have
no clue. It seems to me the proper behaviour would be to restore
the files, and just report a warning that the ACLs could not be
restored properly, or there was a SID conflict.

Other than that one instance (which I ran into this week), I have not
had any problems with backups or restores of the NAS via UNC paths.
I have been backing up this way for the past 2 years.

Just an FYI in case you run into something like this.

You don't want to use drive letters like that for CIFS mounts.

Try using UNC paths instead. \\<server>\<path>.
