The client is running on windows but the subfolder names are all less
than 20 characters long, nowhere near the 255 limit... however when you
say path length do you mean the entire:
\\dcuser\users\username\subfolder1\*subfolder*  in which case yes it
would probably be greater than 255...

Which client OS and how long is the path, including the file name? If  
your client is running any flavor of Windows, you may be exceeding  
Windows' 255 character path length limitation.
