EMC RepliStor Technical Alert DM - LGTpa88100

June 15, 2006

EMC Software issues technical alerts to communicate information to EMC
Software customers when a product defect may cause unexpected behavior
or any kind of data loss.

Please read and utilize the information in this technical alert to avoid
any situation that might arise from the problem(s) described herein. If
you have any questions regarding this technical alert, please contact
EMC Software Technical Support
<http://softwaresupport.emc.com/support/cases/dmCaseContactInfo.asp> .

Read this alert if you currently use RepliStor release 6.1 or 6.1.1

Vendor Name:
EMC

Description of Problem:
Customer's currently using EMC RepliStor releases 6.1 and 6.1.1 with
mount points have vulnerability with replication at the target device. A
hot fix is available to address shared volumes which are remounted.
Additionally a Service Pack release is planned in early July to include
this hot fix as well as a fix for another issue related to mount point
rename options. Please read this Technical Alert for more details on
these two issues.

Problem Description - Mount Point Vulnerability in RepliStor:
If using mount points with RepliStor, when a shared volume is remounted
because of a resource group being brought on-line, RepliStor will not
properly see the mounted volumes re-appear. This will result in the
resource group being brought on-line but RepliStor will not replicate
any of the data on the volume to the target. There will be no indication
of a problem without looking at the target and noticing that data has
not being replicated.

EMC had created and made immediately available guidelines for you to
protect your environment against this vulnerability. See the "Problem
Resolution" section below for appropriate actions.

Problem Resolution - Mount Point Volume Hot Fix LGTpa88100
EMC Engineering has issued a hot fix for RepliStor 6.1, 6.1.1
(rep61450b8.exe. rep61450b8_x64.exe, rep61450b_ia64.exe) users and
highly recommends that customers using mount points install it
immediately. The next Service Pack release for RepliStor, 6.1 SP2
planned in early July, will incorporate this hot fix. No fixes are
required for releases prior to 6.1.

For the hot fixes for RepliStor 6.1 and 6.1.1, please go to EMC Software
at:
http://softwaresupport.emc.com/support/downloads/dmDownloads.asp
Select "Storage Software" in the Product Family field, and then select
"Download Updates & Patches."

Problem Description - Mount Point Rename Operations
Content for the problem.

Description of Problem:
During RENAME operations where the path crosses one or more mount
points, if a RENAME occurs on the source and is replayed on the target,
the file will not get renamed properly on the target. When the file is
renamed on the target, it will end up in a different directory than
intended. From the user's perspective, it will appear as if it was
deleted because the file does not replicate to the intended location.
Any further operations on the file may fail since the file isn't where
it should be on the target. When the initial rename occurs, no error
messages will be generated. It is possible that subsequent operations
will generate errors (such as attempting to rename that file again will
cause an error saying that the file does not exist). By that time,
though it will be difficult to trace the original error.

EMC had created and made immediately available guidelines for you to
protect your environment against this vulnerability. See the "Problem
Resolution" section below for appropriate actions.

Problem Resolution - Mount Point Name Operations
EMC Engineering has the following work around recommendations for
customers with RepliStor 6.1 and 6.1.1 where a rename operation may
cross mount points.

Existing problem:

* If users have a spec that looks like this E:\data TARGETSYS
E:\data
        You then have mount points at E:\data\mountp1
*       If a file is renamed E:\data\mountp1\myfile ->
E:\data\mountp1\yourfile
        On the target the file will end up in E:\data\yourfile

The workaround is to make the spec be:

*       E:\data\mountp1 TARGETSYS E:\data\mountp1

i.e. the spec(s) must be at the mount point or beyond e.g.
E:\data\mountp1\data TARGETSYS E:\data\mountp1\data would also work and
not cause a problem.

Customers who may have a current specification of:

* F:\sqldata TARGETSYS F:\sqldata and three mount points
*       F:\sqldata\mountp1
*       F:\sqldata\mountp2
*       F:\sqldata\mountp3

These customers would have to add three specs to replace the one spec

*       F:\sqldata\mountp1 TARGETSYS F:\sqldata\mountp1
*       F:\sqldata\mountp2 TARGETSYS F:\sqldata\mountp2
*       F:\sqldata\mountp3 TARGETSYS F:\sqldata\mountp3

For customers who may want to mirror all of F:\data they would have to
add specs for ALL other directories in F:\data

For example if users had:

*       F:\sqldata\userfiles
*       F:\sqldata\archivefiles

The addition of the following specifications would be required:

*       F:\sqldata\userfiles TARGETSYS F:\sqldata\userfiles
*       F:\sqldata\archivefiles TARGETSYS F:\sqldata\archivefiles

EMC Engineering is currently working on qualifying a Service Pack
release for RepliStor, 6.1 SP2 targeted for early July, to address this
Mount Point Rename issue. No fixes are required for releases prior to
6.1.
