Sorry for not replying earlier but wanted to make sure everything was OK first.

Thanks to all that replied.

In the end we applied nwlib6g.exe patch to the Novell server. This was with 
reluctance as it is BETA but the other option was to back rev TCPIP (2 
versions) which also could have fixed it. The nwlib6g.exe patch had been ok for 
2 weeks on a test server.

Could have also applied the Compaq Service Pack to the server (not done in the 
end).

Also put this in for the   frag size error but don't know it helped fix it 
/nsr/debug/fragmax  containing  2000000000

Everything is MUCH better now but do still get the occasional RPC error  (on 
other servers too) but the backups do complete OK
