Re: [Networker] Networker 7.3 Encryption

Something interesting on this topic is a press release from the LTO people
saying that LTO-4 spec will include hardware crypto in the drive...
http://www.ultrium.com/newsite/html/news_4_17_06.html
If they get it right the crypto will be able to happen alongside the drive
compression, and then we just have to worry about how we'll feed 240MB/sec into
the darn things.

If you want encryption over the wire then use it. It will impact the
performance of your backup. You'll also have to do compression at source as
well. You'll have to compress first and then encrypt. Hardware compression is
useless when you encrypt as you no longer get a steady stream of like bytes.
If you want to encrypt data being written to a backup device, then use hardware
devices such as Neoscale (my favourite) and Decru (now owned by Netapp).
Neoscale is my favourite as it is application aware.

All,
I am looking at using the encryption that comes with Networker 7.3. Any
thoughts on this would be appreciated.
