 No you can change the volumes to manual recycle, and you can run mminfo
and gather SSID and use nsrmm -S ssid -w 04/19/11 -e 04/19/11  

This will change the browse and retention policy. Remember if you change
the browse policy to 5 years your index file system will get very large.
Better off changing just the retention to 5 years and leave the
browsable to 1 year.

I have been asked to extend the browse and retention policies (legal
requirements) on NDMP backups. NW version is 7.1.2 build 325 on Solaris
8.

The browse and retention policy was 1 year. Leagl requirement make them
5years now.... can I change the policy on existing tapes?
