Re: [Networker] Strange reverse DNS error

We had the same problem, just put the address in the /etc/hosts file
(most simple solution) for example with:
if ifconfig -a shows the address on ce0:5
155.247.116.122 saturn-ce0-5
and the problem will go away

Stan,
I am experiencing an odd situation with a Red Hat Linux server that
is operated by a different department than the one I work in. The
system administrator of that server is not very responsive to
resolving issues backing up his server, so I thought I would try
asking here about it. The error I am seeing in the savegroup
completion reports is
* saturn:/ NetWorker: Diagnostic: Reverse DNS lookup failed for
address 155.247.116.122

As far as I can tell, this 155.247.116.122 address does not exist.
The person who manages that system insists that his server is
configured correctly. I have tried warning him that he should at
least try recovering a few files on each volume to make sure its
working. No go, so far, with that.
Both the NetWorker server (Solaris 9) and this Red Hat Linux client
are running NetWorker 7.2.1. That 155.247.116.122 address does not
respond to pings from our NetWorker server, nor does it show up when
I query our local DNS. The saturn host name is looked up via DNS, it
is not in the NetWorker server's /etc/hosts file. Reverse DNS works
for Saturn. When reverse DNS is tested on Saturn against the network
details for our NetWorker server, it also works fine.
So, why are these errors appearing and what can I tell my reluctant
colleague to do in order to resolve this problem?
This message appeared at one of our webservers which has multiple IP
addresses, which weren't all reverse resolvable.
I think you will find the address if you login on the saturn system
and run '/sbin/ifconfig -a'.
Possible solutions:
- remove the IP address from the system (if possible)
- Put the address in the DNS
- Put the address in /etc/hosts on the saturn system.
greetings,
Dennis
