Ram,

My humble opinion"

Connect your Solaris Legato server to a Gbit Ethernet backup network and
also to the Brocade Tape SAN. Run normal Legato client backups using
the network and tape drives. You can use Legato dynamic drive sharing
(DDS) to "time share" the same set of LTO2 tape drives between the DMX
and Netapps backup workloads (provided they do not run at the same exact
time). Legato DDS controls allocation of the tape drives to either the
Solaris storage node or the netapps filer (first come, first serve -
late bird waits).

In special cases you could try power snap or snap image; but they are
more "expensive" than normal backup workloads and have some side
effects.

Power snap leverages EMC BCV capacity to take a nearly instant backup of
a LUN. The cost in disk space can be large with normal BCVs or small
with "copy on write" BCVs (but with a performance impact for write
intensive workloads). After the BCV is created, it is mounted to a
Legato storage node and backed up to tape. This is use full in special
cases where huge, nearly instant backups & recovers are required by the
application.

Snap Image is designed to backup high density file systems (with
millions of small files). It does block level backups of the LUN instead
of scanning the file system. That is why it is faster. It supports
full and differential backups, but not incremental backups. The amount
of meta data generated in the Legato client file index (CFI) is the same
whether you do a full or differential, so it will fill up your CFI
quickly - plan accordingly. It is best suited for special cases when
normal backups do not complete in the backup window, and you have tried
everything else possible to improve them.

Subject: [Networker] Backing up DMX LUNs

Hello

Please can someone throw some light on what's the best way to backup
LUNs in an EMC DMX box? We have a FC based LTO-2 library that backs up
our Network Appliance filers and we wish to use this library to backup
the DMX box as well.

A Solaris 9 server running NetWorker 7.2.1, the LTO2 tape library and
the filers are connected to a Brocade 3850 switch. The DMX will however
be connected to a Cisco MDS switch.

I'm also curious to know the difference(s) between PowerSnap and
SnapImage modules of Legato.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Rgds, Ram.
