Hi all,

we have installed following hard- and software.
Two clustered NetApp Filer FAS960, one Nearstore R200 for disk2disk-backup,
one directly to nearstore R200 connected DLT7000 drive via HP Surestore 4/1
Bridge (FC-SCSI2 Converter) Legato NetWorker Backupserver is an Windows 2000
System with NetWorker Version 7.2.1 .
ONTAP release for host filer and R200 is V7.0.2R1 .
In future we will serve up to 4 drives for NDMP backup.

+----------+ +-----------+ +---------------------+
|  FAS960  |  <------> |  FAS960   | ----------> |      R200           |
+----------+ Cluster +-----------+ snapvault +---------+-----------+
                                                           | (via FC/SCSI2)
                                                           v
                                                       +---------+
                                                       | DLT7000 |
                                                       +---------+

For example, on R200 is an volume /vol/v1001 . This Volume has an qtree
/lv1001 . This volume is the same volume an on one host filer. On the host
filer this volume has an snap sched of
'Volume v1001: 4 31 8@8,10,12,14,16,18,20'.

On R200 this volume will be snapvaulted with the schedule of
create v1001 0@-
xfer v1001 sv_v1001 62@mon-sun@21

and the snap list for this volume on R200 looks like:
Volume v1001
working...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now my question:
----------------
Collegues who make backups via HP dataprotector from NetApp R200 do this way:
1. rename all two weeks schedule sv_v1001.0 to backup.0
2. make a fullbackup of this snapshot
3. delete the renamed snapshot
In this case they use a savesetname of /vol/v1001/.snapshot/backup.0

Our Legato supporter prefers backups by the following way:
1. NW-Client is the R200, backup-type NDMP
2. saveset: /vol/v1001
3. make a fullbackup every weekend and differential backups between weekends

We want to keep weekend data for 1 Year offline. The snapvaulted data we wants
to hold 8 weeks online on R200.

Which is the best way (volume or snapshot backup) backing up the snapvaulted
backup-data from nearstore R200 and when (all weekend or every 8 weekends)
should we backup to tape ?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other backups, e.g. windows backup, with a lot of data we backup with the
following schedule:

dow S S M T W T F S S M T W T F S S M T W T F S S M T W T F S S
# 1. 2. 3. 4. 1.
lvl f s 5 5 5 5 5 3 s 5 5 5 5 5 3 s 5 5 5 5 5 3 s 5 5 5 5 5 f s

with kind regards, mit freundlichen Gruessen, met vriendelijke groet
