I am in the process to install a backup solution for 15 remote site. I would like to ask the group, what they are doing for thiers remotes sites backup. Almost all my remotes sites have a 10MB link with us. We have to install new server in each site. We scale a maximum of 300GB of data per site with 5% of data movement per day. We estime a stadart backup solution with a Networker licence/tape backup/cartrige at 10K$. So we have at 150K$ to spend.

Can we do better with that 150K$? We love to remove the backup from the user hands and make them centraly. Saddly, we have to choose the solution rapidly, so not much time to test.

From personal experience, a number of small remote sites takes a disproportionate amount of time to manage compared to much larger central sites, so if possible I would be looking at an alternative. If you are considering standalone drives as opposed to libraries, you need to plan your schedules carefully based on the capacity of a single tape, and you also need very reliable local staff who will always be on hand to change tapes as required.

You could possibly consider a solution where the remote data is replicated to your central site and backed up from there. You would need to invest in more disk storage on your central site. The disadvantage may be the time taken for a large restore, although I'm sure a decent replication package would help out with that. I don't have much experience of replication software so I'm sorry I can't suggest any specific details.
