I was hoping for some information regarding the amount of time it is
taking me to backup a volume on an NDMP filer where the backup is being
sent to a Legato Storage Node (the Legato Networker Server). When the
backup of the NDMP client starts, the writing of the data to disk does
not start for approximately 20 minutes. The total size of the saveset is
4gb and the number of files is 120,000.

 

The storage node is the networker server and the device is an advanced
file type device. In other words the device is a non-ndmp device.
Support of this configuration is listed with Networker 7.2 and we have
installed 7.2.1 on our networker server. The ndmp filer is a netapp
filer.

 

This gives us a total backup time of 35minutes for just 4gb of data. We
currently have ndmp tape devices in use that are attached to the filer
and we have better performance. We have purchased disk devices for
faster backups and recoveries.

 

Why is there such a time delay between start of the backup group and
start of the writing of the data to disk? Where is the bottle neck? How
can we improve performance?
