[Networker] Service affecting Max Path length problem

Folks,

A follow up to Allan Nelson's question on Max Path Length issues - wehave consistently reproducible situations which cause multipleNetware servers to abend during backup & eventually fail & restart...


Server: Solaris - either 6.1.4 build562 or 7.2 build 311
Client: Netware 65SP3 & Networker for Netware 7.2

The cause of fatality is long file names which contain UTF8characters eg sample errors are

USR1:/testbkup/temp2/[98D8][9088][795E][4E4B][65C5]([98D8][6E3A][795E][4E4B][65C5])[9605][8BFB][6700][65B0][7AE0][8282][76EE][5F55][4F5C][8005][767E][4E16][7ECF][7EB6][7384][5E7B][5C0F][8BF4][4E66][5E93]([6587][5B66][6BBF][5802])-[5A31][4E50][5148][950B][7F51].url,skipping this directory...* broadstone:USR1: SAVE.NLM: Path too long -USR1:/testbkup/temp2/[5927][5BB6][6765][8BF4][8BF4][770B],[6709][90A3][4E9B][597D][770B][7684][6587][7B26][5408][4E0B][9762][7684][6761][4EF6]:[803D][7F8E]+[7A7F][8D8A]+[7A7F][8D8A][8005][505A][653B]-- [664B][6C5F][6587][5B66][57CE][7F51][53CB][4EA4][6D41][533A].url,skipping this directory...

On our servers in both test & production environments with such filesthat cause these errors - we will see subsequent (multiple) abends.Often the first abend is reported as a general Protection fault withSAVE.NLM running code in module Comn.nss, or maybe HP management willabend or the server may reboot with an ASR & there are more....Abends may not occur immediately such a file is found - but they willoccur at some stage afterwards.

We also see 'path too long' errors where the filenames do NOT containUTF8 characters. So far these have been non-fatal - but path too longerrors where the filenames containing UTF8 characters seem fatal (Isthis just because the path name is so very long ??). Filenamescontaining UTF8 characters which do not exceed a path limit do notcause any problems.

Unfortunately, it will not be easy to stop users creatingfiles/directory structures which cause this problem....
