Hi all,

It seems the cause of my problems was the NAT settings on our firewall.
The support people for our Checkpoint firewall made some tweaks (sadly I
don't know what they were) to the NAT setup and everything worked fine
after that - just one more thing worth checking if you're having
problems backing up through a firewall.  :o)
