Hello Craig,

MSEXCH:IS -- "Information Store" -- this does a database level save of all
databases within all Storage Groups in your Exchange Server. This is the
basic save operation that must be performed. If you decide to do MB or PF,
then they should be in addition.
MSEXCH:KMS -- you need this if you have installed KMS in this Exchange
Server. KMS manages security keys for Exchange.
MSEXCH:SRS -- you need this if you have installed SRS in this Exchange
Server. SRS manages communications to Exchange 5.5 Servers
MSEXCH:MB -- this does brick-level backup of user's mailbox items. It makes
recovering individual items (generally where a user has accidentally deleted
a mail message) but takes a great deal more time and media space. This
cannot replace IS -- you cannot do disaster recovery from MB.
MSEXCH:PF -- this is brick-level backup of Public Folders. Same caveats
apply as do in MB.

There is no MSEXCH:DS for Exchange Server 2000 or 2003 because the Directory
Services are all moved into Active Directory.

Almost all Exchange Server experts agree with Ernie, that brick-level
backups are inefficient and unnecessary. As a compromise, many Exchange
Admins do brick-level only on managers and their secretaries' mailboxes.

To get the same level of protection that you had had under 5.5, all you need
is MSEXCH:IS.

Thanks,
_Scott

Hallo Craig,

Do yourself one big favour: forget about the backup of mail boxes. This is a
marketing feature only and will not help you recover an exchange server.
Mailbox backup is a crude methode to export (using MAPI) a mailbox into a
file and then write it to tape. If you send 1 MB to 1000 users then the DS
backup will contain one message @ 1MB, the mailbox backup will contain the
same message for every user.

My advise: If you want to get into a high ranking position then use MB
backup to pave your way with the superiors. But if you want to have a simple
backup scheme then forget about MB, it is not worth the effort.

Btw: MB Backup is a "metoo" product. Veritas marketing invented this feature
to give the impression that BackupExec is superior to other products, the
others just followed.

Bye
Ernie

Subject: [Networker] MS Exchange 2003 savesets

Hi,

We have very recently migrated our email from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003
Enterprise.

As such I am not very familiar with exactly what data is associated with
each saveset of a Exchange 2003 server. I am not responsible for the
setup/maintenance of the Exchange 2003 server (only ensuring that Networker
is backing it up appropiatly). However, the people responsible for it (as
well as the consultants we've had to help in the
migration) have not been able to explain this with any satisfaction.

With Exchange 5.5 we simply backed up the MSEXCH:DS and MSEXCH:IS savesets,
and I'm assuming that doing this backed up everything (mailboxes, calendar
info, etc...).

In reading the documentation for Networker's Business Suite 4.x for Exchange
2000, it is unclear exactly what the MSEXCH:IS saveset really backs up (the
docs says its all databases in a storage group).

Up until yesturday I was assuming (until I had time to actually research
it) that the MSEXCH:IS saveset included everything. In doing research
(thanks to the Networker mailing list among other sources), I found out that
you have to backup the MSEXCH:MB saveset to get private mailboxes, which I
assume is usually where a user's personal inbox is found.

Our MSEXCH:IS saveset is currently about 11 Gbyte and our MSEXCH:MB saveset
(from last night, the first time its been backed up) is 12 Gbyte. So if the
MSEXCH:IS saveset doesn't include mailboxes, why is it so huge?

We have about 350 users in the US and another hundred or so internationally
(who use Exchange servers local to them). Our Active Directory is on a
seperate machine, and I feel comfortable with backup/restore of the AD.

Our Networker server is 7.1.2 running on HPUX 11i. We are using the
Networker Business Suite v4.0.2

I'd like a clear explanation of what each Exchange 2003 saveset contains.
I'm looking for a better explanation than whats in the Networker
documentation. The end goal here is to ensure that I am backing up
everything to ensure that we are backing up all email messages, calendar
info, personal address books, tasks, and any other data on the Exchange 2003
server.

Here are the savesets I now know about (but want a clear explanation as to
what specifically they contain).

        MSEXCH:IS
        MSEXCH:KMS
        MSEXCH:SRS
        MSEXCH:MB
        MSEXCH:PF
