As far as I know, there's no solution to this if the 'administrator'
hasn't got rights to the root of the tree.

We had exactly the same problem, but as we have several sites, 3 of
which have admin rights to the root, then they're the ones who backup
the NDS, the rest don't bother.

There 'was' a tool out there somewhere which purported to fix this
problem, but I think it hasnow been withdrawn. It wouldn't work for us
as it bizarrely couldn't handle usernames or passwords with underscores
in them. I seem to remember there were some other limitations too -
it's a long time ago. Might be worth a root around the Legato
knowledgebase to see if it's still there.

Incidentally, we once tried restoring an NDS object from backup - and
the tree took a lot of fixing afterwards! I 'understand' that problem
has now been resolved, but I'm not going to try it unless it's
absolutely necessary.

Anyhow, here's what we do.

We have 3 Netware servers. 2 are backed up using an 'admin_local' id.
You can still use the saveset 'All' (safest), just don't load TSANDS on
those servers and the NDS will not be backed up. On the third server,
we use an 'admin_big' account that has access to the root of the tree.
Saveset of 'All' and TSANDS is loaded.

Hope this helps.

Allan.

Calling all Netware gurus:

We have a client who has just configured their first Netware client,
and
are having trouble with a Directive dealing with NDS. Because of lack
of
permissions, they're getting warning messages about a series of files
in
NDS that can't be backed up, and want to just skip them, but we can't
get
the syntax right. Warning messages like:

* <host>:{NDS} (1) .NLS:License
ID=SN:xxxxxxx.NLS:Publisher=Novell+NLS:Product=NetWare 5
Server+NLS:Version=500.OU=SERVERS.OU=FOO.O=BAR.T=BAR.
User
has no access rights to the named object.

I recommended trying directive as follows:

<< "{NDS}" >>
     skip: .NLS?License*

But this has resulted in error messages:

: bad dir spec, line 1 of server backup directives

And worse, failed to backup anything.

Any help appreciated.

tia,
cf
