Dave,

thanks for your response. For labelling the tapes I didn't get this error. This error I got with different tapes, several of them are new, so they cannot be worn out. I also did the cleaning twice since I got this error (in the article you mentioned the cleaning should be done more often when using new tapes and I am using several new tapes lately, I will try again. I also used a new cleaning tape).

First I thought tape drive 1 needed repair, but when I disabled it the error happend to tape drive 0. The strange thing is, if I keep drive 1 with the error (and not disabling it), drive 0 seems to work well. Today we tried as well to change the SCSI cable, but this didn't help either.

Hilde,

We're using Networker 6.1 on Windows 2K with Sony SDX-500C AIT-2 tape
drives. I've occasionally seen the Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) errors. I
usually get the errors when I'm labeling tapes (I label my tapes manually)
and it's either because the tape drive needs cleaning or because the tapes
have been used enough that they're getting worn out.

I know AIT-2 drives are supposed to be self cleaning but Spectralogic, our
jukebox vendor, recommends running a cleaning tape through the drives
approximately every 100 hours of use. There's an article on the subject at:

http://www.spectralogic.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=support.kbArticle&KbaseId=2
64

(Note: if the url wraps in your email you may need to put it pack together
to use it.)

Because the errors you're getting are part way through backups on several
different tapes I suspect either you need to run a cleaning tape through
your tape drives or the drives themselves are in need of repair. It's
possible though if the tapes have been used a lot for a long time that they
are getting worn out.

Hope this helps.

I am working with Networker 6.1 on a Windows 2000 Server. In the last days I regularly get one of the following error messages:

Apr 11 12:29:59 backup-machine: NetWorker media: (warning) \\.\Tape1 writing: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)., at file 2 record 613 Apr 11 12:29:59 backup-machine: NetWorker media: (notice) 8mm AIT-2 tape 000263 on \\.\Tape1 is full Apr 11 12:29:59 backup-machine: NetWorker media: (notice) 8mm AIT-2 tape 000263 used 39 MB of 50 GB capacity Apr 11 12:29:59 backup-machine: NetWorker media: (warning) verification of volume "000263", volid 1515195649 failed, read open error: No error Apr 11 12:29:59 backup-machine: NetWorker media: (notice) verification of volume "000263", volid 1515195649 failed, volume is being marked as full. Afterwards the tapes are marked as full, the drive is not able to unload the tape (I have to do it manually). It happens to both drives tape0 and tape1 . First it happened only to drive \tape2, then I disabled it, then it happened to \tape0 as well. In the event viewer is the following message: The device \Device\Tape1 has a bad block.

and in the log file:
04/26/05 11:37:21 AM nsrd: media info: unload error for jukebox '[email protected]' detected. Retrying

The Networker monitor shows : tape1 read open error: No error

We use a Qualstar TLS-4222i Jukebox with 2 SONY SDX-500C drives.

Is it a problem of the tapes, of the drives or what else ?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Hilde Gerlach
