The documents are good. Thanks Terry.

Since I back up the VM instances separately, I only want to back up the
rest of the stuff (OS, VM 'app', etc). Do I simply configure Networker
to exclude the *.dsk files? Would I have to use the savepnpc commands
in this case (I cannot shut down the instances).

Hi Ken

That's correct; you do need to install NetWorker on your VMware server.
However, be aware that in making up the .dsk files, you're backing up
your entire virtual machines EACH TIME YOU DO A BACKUP. There is no
such things as an incremental of a .dsk file. This is equivalent to
backing up an entire database, rather than just backing up the changes
to the database.
Also, if you do a backup of the .dsk file while the virtual machine is
running, who knows what you'll get when you attempt a restore.

You may, instead, want to install NetWorker client or storage node
software in each of the virtual machines.

Earlier this week, I posted a reply to this list with pointers to two
VMware documents that talk about the different methods of backups. You
might want to search the list for these, or just go to the VMware web
site and search there; they weren't hard to find.

Good luck!

I have to backup the .dsk files on a VMWARE server. I read somewhere
that the Networker client for LINUX needs to be installed. Is this
correct? Also do I specify .dsk# for the Save Sets. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
