Okay, command finally completed about an hour and half later with:

nsrck: completed recovery of index for client 'fred'

nsrck: /disk3/nsr_index/fred contains 34769860 records occupying 5181 MB
nsrck: Completed checking 2 client(s)

It was the merge for ~35 million records that took so long.

Assuming you understand C and have an idea how your OS works, you could
always attach to the nsrck process with a system call tracer (like truss
on Solaris et. al. or strace on Linux) and watch what it's doing. That
should give you an idea if it's actually accomplishing anything, though
with a process like merging millions of records, it might be hard to
differentiate between "making progress" and "stuck in a loop".
