I only have experience on Solaris..SDLT tape, sorry to be in an LTO thread.

I did not verify the write errors with tar because;

a.) Some had write errors very far into tape..too far to wait for tar..
b.) Those same tapes experienced write errors in different drives
c.) Some tapes experienced failures on labeling (also on different drives)

That is, there was no need as the problems followed the media in
Networker..if one tape had a write error at 160GB, it had a it on another
drive at roughly 160GB. This was with cloning to the tape in different
drives.

I had the media analyzed by Quantum which found edge damage on some of the
tapes. Some drives were replaced and with the media weeded out the write
errors diminished. I could not attribute the write errors directly to the
7.1 upgrade.
