Hi,

I've been toying around for a while trying to get our Sony AIT-3 drives
to do hardware compression with Networker.

Our Networker server is a HP K5xx class running HP-UX 11.11.  We are
running Networker 6.1.3 currently (may be using 6.1.4 shortly).  We have
a SpectraLogic Gator64000 library with 4 attached AIT-3 drives.  When
the library boots up, it says (via the touchscreen on the library) that
the drives are capable of compression and compression is enabled.

However, shortly thereafter, the library says that the drives are able
to do compression but compression has been disabled.

The devices I'm using on our HP machine are

The output to a lssf command for each of the devices (the output is all
the same) is:

# lssf /dev/rmt/c2t1d0BESTnb
stape card instance 2 SCSI target 1 SCSI LUN 0 berkeley no rewind best
density available at address 8/4.1.0 /dev/rmt/c2t1d0BESTnb

Note it says "best density", but doesn't specify what that density is.

I've talked to both SpectraLogic and Legato to no avail to figure out
how to get the drives to do hardware compression.  All that SpectraLogic
told me is that the drives' compression is enabled at library bootup,
and its the OS and/or software on the Networker server that determines
whether or not it'll use compression.

Does anyone on the Networker list have any suggestions?  The
installation of the HP server and library predates my employment, so I
wasn't around for the initial setup.

I can provide more information if anyone has any ideas.
