The windows task manager let's me know it's running and I can see in the
NWAdmin that it's being written to at a certain speed.  Guess I'll just
have to keep guessing...

Not really,

what you could try is to see (on the client) if the save process is
still working.

top on unix/linux could do that or use the task manager under windows.
one explanation of endless is that is is not doing anything and waiting
for a retry or a timeout.
