Yes, as far as licensing is concerned ...

Now you have to make sure that the SN's use "themselves" as the storage node
(Ive seen another mail or two detailing this in the last day or two).

You would probably be well advised to disable index backups from the groups
that run the clients with the shared drives and then do a "index only"
backup a little while later. This prevents the backup server from wanting to
grab a drive for indexes during your backup - which means less tape mounts -
which means better overall throughput ...

I normally dont like to share out all of my library drives (so if I have a 4
drive library I would only max share 3 of them). But that is personal (and
practical) experience. You might want to do some testing (include restores)
with only one shared drive and see what the impact is. (including cost).

Riaan

So,
Since I have either client and server with same OS what I need is:
One server license
One Autoloader license for the library that have two drive
Two DDS license, one for each drive
Three Storage Node license cause we want to made a LANFREE backup just for
three host and for that we will configure the sharing of drive, the other
client will do a LAN backup.

And I have to do a lot of job!!

It is right?

Thank's

Bonjourno Antonio,

In essence there are only a few things you would need.

Each host would obviously need access to drives to backup to (your scsi /
fibre channel setup).

You would have possible direct access to the drives - or - You would need
either Drive Sharing (Legato DDS) - which is a license per each individual
drive shared (whether these drives are in a library or stand-alone).

And / or

You would need some sort of "Storage Node" (Legato SN) or "Dedicated Storage
Node" (Legato DSN) license. (Licenses per host)

If you only intend backing up each host to its "own" drive or destination I
suggest going for Dedicated Storage Nodes as they are quite cheaper than the
normal storage nodes. (You cannot backup other clients data to the drive
being controlled by that host then - only itself).

If it is very large amounts of data and you need to back each host to its
own autochanger you would need a autochanger license for each of the
seperate libraries (and they depend on the slot size). But this is normally
quite expensive and companies tend to rather go for a single larger library
(varying to taste off course).

The smaller versions of Legato's backup server licenses has some limitations
(I cannot recall them now) - btu it is best you just verify this as well.

On top of that the normal Legato licensing will apply - i.e. if it is a
Windows backup server and Linux host you would need one clientpak for the
Linux machines, plus additional client licenses (if you dont have enough to
cover the extra 3) and then off course any applications that you might want
to backup "online" would require their own Business Suite Module Licenses.

Some other "list-ees" might want to add onto this.

Regards,
Riaan

Subject: [Networker] lanfree backup in a SAN

Hi to all,
i have a question about use of Networker to backup in a SAN environment.
WE have 3 host Red Hat Linux and we want to realize a lanfree backup.
We have a single HBA for this host which they are connected to SAN's
switches.

What we need to realize this project?
Especially we need some License pack to use SAN environment or just connect
the library to backup server, other hba for single host?
We are really lacking in knowledge about the infrastructure we want to
realize, so please can you be more verbose as you can?

Thank's
And sorry for my english
