In any case, I do not understand why spaces were once allowed
like for other special chars such ":" in groups

Another one is why a dash (-) to be allowed in group names
but not in pools, nor in label templates .....

Same here, going back to NetWorker 4.x. In fact our groups, pool names,
and label templates all had spaces in them from early on.

I was ticked when I upgraded to 6.x and discovered that label
templates could no longer have spaces in the names. NetWorker can
handle
old tapes with spaces in the name, but it won't let you label any new
tapes using that template.
