More information. (and apologies for the double-post - fat fingers)

I RTFM the rman admin guide. Unrelated topic suggests bouncing the daemons,
so I look to see which daemons are running. I saw _all_ the Networker
server daemons - nsrd, nsrmmdbd, lgtolmd, nsrindexd, and the client
nsrexecd-s. I ask my Unix admin to bounce the daemons.

The orginal error message said "unable to start save session with server
lawson" Lawson's the client, legato2 is the Networker server.

The error message has changed - "nwora_open_backup: A connection to NW
server 'lawson' could not be established because 'Program not registered'"
Once again, lawson is the Networker client.

I've come to reconsider the success of my test of a client-initiated save.
$ save -s legato2 <name_of_file>
It works.

However:
$ save <name_of_file>
save: Using lawson as server
save: RPC warning: RPC cannot make a procedure call: Create failed: Program
not registered
save: Cannot open save session with lawson
