One possibility that comes to mind is a faulty tape drive. If you
have a scratch tape cartridge available, put it in one of the tape
drives, then do something like

   time cp big_file /dev/rmt/xxxxx

to copy the file to the tape drive directly in Solaris and find out
how long the copy process took. If the process takes significantly
more time that the rated throughput for the device, you might have
a tape drive problem.
