Rob,

I don't know anything specific about your situation but in the 6 or 8 times
one of our AIT-3 drives went into service mode it was because of read errors
during cloning. This has been happening every 2-4 weeks since the beginning
of the year and cleaning didn't make it go away. We replaced that drive
last week and I don't expect to see the problem again (at least for a couple
of years anyway).

We were getting messages like this in our Savegroup Completion Notification:

nsrclone: error, can not read record 148 of file 37 on 8mm AIT tape 010032

and messages like this in the daemon log file:

03/08/2004 10:05:28 PM nsrd: media warning: \\.\Tape0 reading: Data error
(cyclic redundancy check).
03/08/2004 10:05:28 PM nsrd: media notice: Volume "010032" on device
"\\.\Tape0": Cannot decode block. Verify the device configuration. Tape
positioning by record is disabled.
03/08/2004 10:05:28 PM nsrd: media info: can not read record 148 of file 37
on 8mm AIT tape 010032
03/08/2004 10:05:28 PM nsrd: media warning: \\.\Tape0 reading: Data error
(cyclic redundancy check).

So if cleaning doesn't fix the problem I think you may have to repair or
replace the drive.

What exactly does it mean when my drive enable keeps getting set to service
mode? I've cleaned them but still it happens, is there a recalibration
procedure too?
