Yes, that's the technique I was referring to earlier.

It's been a few years since I tried it on a DLT7K, but my memory tells
me that I got lots of "synchronization" errors after I attempted to
space past the overwritten EOT.  I couldn't get 'mt' to find another
file mark.

It could be one of those things that works sometimes but not every
time.  I never tested it again.
