12MB/sec isn't really that bad for LTO-1 drives. 6.4.3 (I think they are
up to P11) has some fixes to the slow start of dumps, but probably isn't
your problem. You could switch to backing up by quota tree which should
improve things (just remove remove /vol/vol0 from client setup and add
/vol/vol0/qtree1, /vol/vol0/qtree2, etc.). Of course, this runs the risk
of someone creating a new quota tree and it not getting added to the
backup. This will increase your parallelism depending on the number and
depth of your quota trees. It will also make disaster recovery faster
than volume backup. The risk would need to be evaluated though.
