Two things come to mind Robert... isn't the command line:

save -x -c $SERVERNAME -s legato -G Database -b ONSITE -l 9

note the capital G?

Secondly and probably more likely, how is the script being run?  As root?
Chances are the save command needs to be kicked off by root.  If you have
sudo on the box try doing "sudo ./myscriptname".
