I should note that the L1 or L2 identifier takes up two character
positions in the bar code. So, for example, if my sequence ran from say
AAA000-AAA999 then a typical bar code would appear as follows:

A A A 0 0 0 L 1

or maybe

A A A 9 9 9 L 2

This is how you get 8 characters. Again, the type of drive (LTO1 or
LTO2) will dictate the value of the identifier (L1 or L2).
