tru64 5.1a for the server
redhat linux 9 storage node with latest kernel for large disk support
48 WD 250 GB SATA
4 12 port 3Ware 8506
clone P4 with 4GB ram
2 4.8 TB partitions running JFS filesystem
4-25 MB per second per partition depending on feed
My next step is to change some network hardware to get a 1-2 Gb path
from all file servers.
Since I only do a full once a month the speed is OK. Of course I hope to
improve it with the network changes but it doesnt really matter now.
My hardware cost for the node was 30K which is a bargain but I could
improve performance a good bit with more expensive hardware
judging by the toms hardware SATA raid review. If you are used to
Dec/Compaq/HP raid hardware the 3ware stuff is low featured.
OTOH my Compaq HSG-80 SAN seems rather slow to do backups.

Over all I would spend a little more since it turned out I had the money
last year after all and do either SCSI or FC to SATA disk carriers.
