I suspect that your description above is not entirely accurate. If you
recycle a clone volume it will not affect the original. Recycling will
delete only the copies on the recycled volume.

However... if you mark a volume as recyclable, this is a different case.
Doing this will take every save set on the volume, and mark it as
recyclable. The flag in the media database that indicates that a save set
is recyclable applies to the entire save set, i.e. all copies, so this will
also mark the originals as recyclable. This is not what you want.

The solution is to actually recycle the clone volume (relabel it).
