My problem could be specific to our environment (Linux storage node).
To be honest I did not try it on anything other than Linux.
Linux version of Networker has other issues (such as non working
/etc/LGTOuscsi/erase),
so I'd not be surprised if the described problem was just a part of
them.
Anyway, I'd not worry about this much since as I said I found a work
around.
I just use dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/nst0 bs=64k count=100 instead of the
mentioned erase utility.
After that Networker labels new tapes successfully :)
